The January Gem
January 12th, 2011 by Angelo
You might know that the garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. It is also the traditional anniversary stone for the second year of marriage. The garnet represents fidelity, commitment, protection over a loved one’s travels, and ensures success. However, did you know that the name garnet was derived from the succulent red pomegranate seed? The Latin word “granatas”, means “grain” or “seed”. Greek mythology tells us about Persephone, the young goddess of sunshine, who was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld. In exchange for temporary freedom, he offered her pomegranate seeds, therefore guaranteeing her return back to him. Use of the garnet traces all the way back to bronze age, where archaeologists discovered primitive garnet jewelry amidst lake dwellers’ graves. The garnet exists in a rainbow of natural colors including rosy pinks, violet, vibrant oranges, and lime greens and muted yellows.
